Lessons in Life

An idea nicked from the the Diva Blue Rooms .
So what are the important lessons I have learned in life?
1. The only thing that matters in life is relationships – friendships, family, lovers. Without them, life means nothing, but unfortunately, it usually takes the death of one of these people to make you realize it. Cherish those around you and tell them you love them. You may regret not doing it one day.
2. People do change. Give them a chance – just don’t invest too much of yourself until you’re convinced that they have turned over a new leaf. Everyone makes mistakes – some make more than others, but everyone deserves the chance to make it up.
3. It is not up to us to judge others. Whatever someone might have done to us/someone else, we have no right to pass judgement. Be kind to everyone, treat them as you would like to be treated, and leave the judgement/punishment up to whichever higher power you believe in.
4. Do not hold grudges. They will eat you up inside. Forgive and move on: you will feel better for it.
5. Admit when you’re wrong. You WILL make mistakes – sometimes big and hurtful ones – but if you admit when you’re wrong, you will be making the first step towards forgiveness – from both yourself and from others.
6. Life is a series of choices. It is up to us to choose which path to take. If we take a path which makes us unhappy, it is our responsibility, and noone else’s, to change it. Do not blame others for your own bad choices: just because you didn’t have the guts to say ‘no’ to someone does not mean that it is THEIR fault.
7. Learn to say ‘no’. No matter how hard it is, you will feel better for it. Learning what you can and cannot cope with, what you actually WANT to cope with, will make you a stronger and happier person – and more in control of your own life.
8. No matter how far you travel, you will never escape yourself.
I can’t say I manage to live by all of these all of the time, but I try. Nobody’s perfect, especially not me, but I’m trying to be the best I can be. These are lessons learned from hard experience. There are more, but these are the most important ones I guess. I should start taking notice of some of them a little more, I know, but one step at a time…
